The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose.

Prunus Stella

Planted in a large container in the late spring of 2020 on the patio, prunus Stella is an edible cherry.

Said to be sweet and dark red, these larger than average fruits should be ready by the end of July to be picked straight from the tree.

Bred in British Columbia and released for sale in 1968, Stella is apparently reliable in the cooler parts of the UK.  It reports good disease and canker resistance, as well as fruit splitting, although only reported as average to brown rot.

Stella is fully self-fertile and makes a good pollination partner to many other cherry varieties.

Plant in full sun and add an annual spring mulch.  Feed with blood, fish and bone in March and June.

Prune immediately after flowering. Aim to prune out any stems growing inward, crossing or damaged/diseased. Shorten each non fruiting branch to around 14 inches and each side shoot to 6 inches.

Remember to prune in June on a dry day help prevent silver leaf.
