Frosts are common at this time of year so be sure not to walk on frosted lawns as it can cause die back.
Thankfully we don't have a lawn, but the terrace, patio and steps can get slippery when they don't get a chance to dry out properly. A good scrub with a stiff brush and soapy water is usually good enough to keep the algae at bay until spring when the jetwash comes out.
Bird feeders will become busy again as the natural food sources dry up, and regularly need topping up. If it freezes, don't forget to break the ice in the birdbaths. Birds will bathe even in winter, and obviously need somewhere to drink.
Insulate outdoor taps.
Leave hydrangea flowers in situ as they will help to protect the new buds when they emerge.
Plant bare root shrubs and trees. Check tree ties and adjust if required.
Winter prune Wisteria back to 2-3 buds.
Prune climbing rose side shoots by 2/3 for next year's flowers, remove any crossing or diseased stems and tie in the laterals to create a strong framework.
Continue to clear leaves.
Knock snow off evergreens to prevent damage.
Group containers together to give them some protection from the worst of the weather.
Prune/lift canopies of acers and birches if necessary before the end of December to prevent bleeding.
