The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose.

Malus

Apple tree

Having inherited this espallier apple tree when we bought the house, we have no idea of the variety although the size, colour and flavour suggest it might be a braeburn.

It seems to be self fertile (since our neighbour removed his apple tree). Ours is grown as an espallier with annual pruning in winter and summer, and since apple trees tend to be grown of various rootstocks, the eventual height and spread is variable.

In August cut back all the sideshoots from the horizontal leaders to three leaves from the basal cluster leaders (3in). Sideshoots on vertical stems are best removed completely. Thin fruiting spurs if they become congested. This should be done over a few years rather than all at once to avoid losing too much produce.

Full sun in any soil. Ours is half in the Yen Garden and half in the workspace.  Apart from one year, it yields more than ample fruit for us reliably.
