The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose.

October's odd jobs

Begin planting spring bulbs but hold off with tulips which are best planted in November.

Remove and compost faded summer bedding and create winter displays of spring bulbs topped with wallflowers, cyclamen and violas.

Lift cannas, dry off and store in a cool but frost free, dark spot (basement).

Complete the moving/potting up of any shrubs while the soil is still relatively warm.  If left too late, they can be moved in spring.

Finish harvesting apples and store only unblemished fruit.

Clean guttering before the autumn storms begin.  They will probably require another blitz after the leaves have finished falling.

Prune climbing roses, clearing up any fallen leaves but don't compost them.

Prune bush roses to prevent winter wind rock.

Cut back perennials that have died back.

Sweep up fallen leaves (apart from rose leaves) and bag up to make leafmold.
