The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose.

Plant of the Month 2017

Acer palmatum

Family: sapindaceae

Deciduous tree

For red/purple varieties some sun is required. Shelter from wind to prevent scorching.

Variegated acers need partial shade.

Common names: Japanese acer. Mountain maple.

*Plant in sheltered spot to avoid scorching from wind and sun.
*Prune if necessary in winter when dormant.
*Mulch every couple of years with well rotted manure but as with all plants, avoid mulching right up to the trunk.
*Great in containers with John Innes 2 mixed with some ericaceous compost.  Repot every few years in either April or September.  Feed in spring/summer with slow release fertiliser.
