Tucked away behind the bottom shed, this area gets less sun than most of the other parts of the garden.
Having been used for a huge chicken run, there was little to clear in terms of plants. However, it became a running joke that each time any digging was done in this area we harvested house bricks - every year finds a new crop, even 6 years on!
Mugwort's Retreat has had three makeovers in the last 6 years. Firstly a small bed to home a birch tree, then a larger sweep incorporating a long shady spot that was filled with ferns. This was named the Pink Garden since almost all of the flowers were in pink.
But there was nowhere to sit and enjoy the sheltered position, which meant the Pink Garden was often overlooked in favour of other areas.
Once the new fence had been erected, the flowerbed was reshaped again and the planting was overhauled.
A small patio was built and the gravel was sieved of all the rubbish the removal of the hedge had caused.
A further two birch trees were planted to help Mugwort's Retreat feel a little more like a woodland. The seating area is completely secluded and provides the perfect spot to enjoy the birdsong, the buzz of the bees and the fragrance of r. New Dawn and r. Mum in a Million.
